PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE

USES

The Present Simple is used to talk about:

  1. Facts or general truths (things that are always true).

   Example: The sun rises in the east.

  1. Habits or routines (things we do regularly).

   – Example: I brush my teeth every morning.

  1. Permanent situations (things that are generally true for a long time).

   – Example: She lives in London.

FORM

  1. Affirmative Form:

   – I/You/We/They + base verb (work, live, eat)

     – Examples: I work every day. They play football on weekends.

   – He/She/It + base verb + -s/-es

     – Examples: She works at a school. He watches TV at night.

  1. Negative Form:

   – I/You/We/They + do not (don’t) + base verb

     – Examples: I don’t like coffee. They don’t eat meat.

   – He/She/It + does not (doesn’t) + base verb

     – Examples: He doesn’t play tennis. She doesn’t drive to work.

  1. Question Form:

   – Do + I/you/we/they + base verb?

     – Examples: Do you speak English? Do they live here?

   – Does + he/she/it + base verb?

     – Examples: Does she like chocolate? Does it rain often here?

In short answers we say:

Yes, I/you/we/they do                                                      Yes, he/she/it does.

No, I/you/we/they don’t                                                  No, he/she/it doesn’t

  • Examples: Do you walk every day? Yes, I do. Does he work in a bank? No, he doesn’t.

 Time Expressions for the Present Simple

Every day, usually, sometimes, always, never, on Mondays, at night, in the morning.

  – Examples: I usually wake up at 7 a.m. They always eat dinner at 6 p.m.

 Spelling Rules for Adding “-s” in the 3rd Person Singular (He/She/It)

  1. Base verb + -s for most verbs.

   – Example: He plays football.

  1. Base verb ending in -o, -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, -z + -es.

   – Example: She goes to school. He watches TV.

  1. Base verb ending in a consonant + y, change -y to -ies.

   – Example: He studies English. She flies to New York.
