Basic Sales Vocabulary

Activity: What do you know about sales? What strategies do companies use to sell products or services?” What would you recommend to someone to help them sell a product or service?

 

How much do you know about SALES?

  • Sales means selling something to someone.
  • When you sell, you give a product (something you make or have) to a customer (a person who buys).
  • The customer pays money for the product.

Important Words for Sales:

  1. Customer:

    • A customer is the person who buys something.
    • Example: “The customer is buying shoes.”
  2. Product:

    • A product is the thing you sell.
    • Example: “Our company sells cars. Cars are the product.”
  3. Price:

    • The price is the money you need to pay for something.
    • Example: “The price of the phone is $100.”
  4. Sell:

    • To sell means to give a product to a customer for money.
    • Example: “They sell clothes in the store.”
  5. Buy:

    • To buy means to pay money for something.
    • Example: “I want to buy a new computer.”
  6. Discount:

    • A discount means the price is lower. You pay less money.
    • Example: “This shirt has a 20% discount.”

How Does Sales Work?:

  • Step 1: The customer wants to buy a product.
  • Step 2: The customer asks about the price.
  • Step 3: The customer pays the money to the company.
  • Step 4: The company sells the product.

Role-Play: Simple Sales Conversation 

Instructions:

  1. Work with a classmate.
    • One student will play the role of the salesperson.
    • The other student will play the role of the customer.
    • Read the Example Script below before you start
    • Create your own similar conversations by changing the product (e.g., shoes, a laptop, a book) and price. You can use your company product /service.
  2. Scenario:
    • The customer wants to buy a product, and the salesperson will help them.
    • Use the vocabulary learned in class: customer, product, price, sell, buy, discount.

Example Script:

Salesperson: “Hello! How can I help you?”

Customer: “I want to buy a product.”

Salesperson: “What product do you want?”

Customer: “A (phone). How much is it?”   

Salesperson: “The price is ($100). We have a 10% discount today.”

Customer: “Great! I want to buy it.”
