Basic Question Forms

Activity: Pair Practice: Students work in pairs. One asks a Yes/No question, the other answers.

Example Questions:

“Do you work with clients?” “Is your team big?” “Does your manager speak English?” “Are you busy now?” Now create your own ones.

Basic Theory: Yes/No Questions

How to make Yes/No Questions

We can use two main types of Yes/No questions:

  1. Do/Does Questions:
  • We use “Do” or “Does” at the beginning of the question.

For example:

  • “Do you work here?”
  • “Does she have a meeting?”

Use “Do” with I, you, we, they:

  • “Do you like coffee?”
  • “Do they work in sales?”

Use “Does” with he, she, it:

  • “Does he work in marketing?”
  • “Does it work?”
  1. Is/Are Questions:
  • We use “Is” or “Are” at the beginning of the question.

For example:

  • “Is she in the office?”
  • “Are they ready?”

Use “Is” with he, she, it:

  • “Is he busy?”
  • “Is the report finished?”

Use “Are” with you, we, they:

  • “Are you at the office?”
  • “Are they here?”
