Theory: There is / There are

In English, we use “There is” and “There are” to talk about things that exist in a place.

1. When to use “There is”

  • We use “There is” for one thing (singular).
  • Example:
    • There is a computer on the desk.
    • There is one phone in the office.

2. When to use “There are”

  • We use “There are” for more than one thing (plural).
  • Example:
    • There are two computers in the room.
    • There are five chairs at the table.

3. Negative Form

  • To say something is not there, we say:

    • There isn’t for one thing.
    • There aren’t for more than one thing.
  • Examples:

    • There isn’t a printer in the office.
    • There aren’t any chairs in the room.

4. Question Form

  • To ask if something is there, we say:

    • Is there for one thing.
    • Are there for more than one thing.
  • Examples:

    • Is there a whiteboard in the meeting room?
    • Are there any pens on the desk?

Summary:

  • There is = one thing (singular)

The Office

In the office, there is a big window that gives a lot of light. There are plants on the window sill, which makes the room look fresh. There is one printer near the door. The office is quiet, and we can work well here.
