Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving is known as America’s biggest shopping day. After being closed on Thursday, shopping centers across the country open early on Friday. Some open at 12:01 a.m., while others start at 4 a.m. There are some “sleepyhead” places, like Target this year, that don’t open until 6 a.m. From Friday until Christmas Eve, this is the time when businesses make nearly 25% of their yearly earnings. This season helps many businesses to be “in the black,” meaning they earn enough money for the year.

Local TV reporters interview people who camp outside stores a day or two before they open on Friday. These shoppers wait patiently in line for items that can be 50% off or more.

“Oh, we have fun,” said one person in line. “We bring games to play, watch TV, order lots of pizza, and meet interesting people. And, most importantly, we save a lot!” The downside is that only a few items have huge discounts. Most stores offer discounts ranging from 10% to 50%, saving shoppers anywhere from $10 to $400 per item, which is why many Americans look forward to shopping.

However, not everyone enjoys shopping. Reverend William Graham wants to change the name of Black Friday. “We want to call it Remember Jesus Friday. People should start the season with the right mindset. Christmas has turned into a Season of Shopping. We want it to be a Season of Giving—not just material gifts, but giving your time and help. Clean for an elderly neighbor, teach a child to read, visit the sick in hospitals or nursing homes, or donate food to the Red Cross. Celebrate Christmas by remembering Jesus instead of focusing on Santa Claus.”
