Topic 1.10.4 If Work Were Perfect

IF WORK WERE PERFECT

1.Workplace Experiences

Think individually for a minute about these questions:

  • What is the biggest challenge you have faced at work?
  • Have you ever had a difficult colleague, manager, or situation at work?
  • What would make your job easier or more enjoyable?

Discuss your experiences with a partner.

Then each pair shares one interesting experience with the class (without naming specific companies or people to keep it neutral).

2. Categorizing Workplace Problems

Which of these problems are common in different workplaces?

3A. Grammar review: Second conditional

  • “If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be?”
  • “If I had fewer emails to answer, I would be less stressed.”
  • “If my office had more natural light, I would feel more energetic.”

Explanation

  • Form: If + past simple, would + base verb
  • Usage: To talk about hypothetical or imaginary situations

(remember that instead of the past simple we can also use the past continuous and instead of would we also use could or might)

  13. If we had more vacation days, employees…
  14. If my workplace were more relaxed, I…

4.Speaking Activity: Workplace Problem-Solving

Pair Work or Small Groups

  1. Think of some workplace problems.
  2. Then come up with hypothetical solutions using the second conditional. E.g.
  • “Our office is always noisy.”
  • “If the company provided quiet workspaces, employees would focus better.”

5. Role-play: Meeting

  • One student is a manager, the other employees suggest hypothetical improvements to the office:
    • If we had better coffee, people would stay more energized.
    • If the company offered remote work, employees would be happier.

6. Writing Exercise

  • Write 3-5 sentences about how you would improve your workplace using the second conditional.
